NAQOYQATSI--->Life as War

“NAQOYQATSI” or Life as War: This film focuses on society's transition from a natural environment to a technology-based industrial environment. It was created not by filming in the real world, but by using archive footage and stock images, manipulated and processed digitally on non-linear editing workstations and intercut with specially-produced CGI. Reggio described the process as "Virtual cinema."

This film has been capture movable picture or VDO of the societies in both natural environments by using negative graphic, slow motion picture, repetitive motion, and reversing scene to remind audience of the natural being. Those movement is playing along the excitement music which is quite contrast to the film. The interesting in this film is that they try to link nature to the human activity. The example is when the soldiers walking in a circle, surrounding their captain which refer to the galaxy that all star is circling around the sun.

...SOLDIERS IS WALKING IN CIRCLE AS GALAXY...

FORM FOLLOW FUNCTION

From the topic that I pick up this week is a famous quote that many try to use as the concept of their architecture; however, to define the exactly meaning of them is become problematic. As I did a research, the description of ‘FORM FOLLOWS FUNCTION’ in WIKI is a principle associated with modern architecture and inductrial design in the 20th century. The principle is that the shape of a building or object should be primarily based upon its intended function or purpose. In my point of view, there are a lot of potential of using ‘form follows function’, such as, the clearly space planning and the nicely access of the building, however, this may effect to the form outside which may not good in the outside facade. It is more formalistic.

Another quote that I focus on is from the lecture, WORDs CAN BECOME ORNAMENT. In this quote make me realize of EVERYTHING is EVERYTHING. I think of the thing that we just let it out from our mouth can be inspire as an ornament.

METROPOLIS and TRANSPARENCY

To continue the lecture, ‘TRANSPARENCY’ becomes the main word that TAYLOR keeps talking about. He have been comparing ‘transparency’ with government things, such as, government place set the window to let people see how they work, however, it doesn’t mean that people will know exactly how they cheat or working on. Therefore, ‘transparency’ is the topic that I will focus on. As I watch the film ‘METOPOLIS’, the thing that I get is about the emotional things and the way they design the text instead of using sound to represent the feeling. Transparency was popping up in my mind, because of what they using text to express their feeling. For example, “LOOK--!!” some may think this text represent bossy feeling or represent a feeling of startle but for me I think this text represent the excitement.

To conclude the entire thing that I wrote, there is no right or wrong to simulate something, its depend on what is in your mind that lead you to result it.

SIMULATION AND BORAT

To connect the lecture of simulation and Borat Movie is quiet hard for me to understand but when I keep thinking of what happened in the scene, one critical point has POP UP!! As the word simulation itself means to make something simpler by copying or something that occur in hyperrealist way. The word ‘hyperactive’ is what I’m going to focus on and also the word that I can think of the actor of Borat. There are many abnormal human being scenes that I saw in the movie which he pretended to make other laugh by acting as an inexperience adult. In this point of view is the linkage of simulation and the movie. As the director wrote the script in the kid habit and let adult act in the movie is very contrast, which can refer that the boundary between simulation and the acting of actor is that people cannot realize what is an appropriate habit confronted to the public or an inappropriate habit.

'BOOK KILLS THE BUILDING'

Nowadays, there are many books established against each other some are good but some are bad. Moreover, there is also a book that critic in something that they dislike. Therefore, I come up with the quote of ‘BOOK KILLED THE BUILDING’. I’m quite interesting and agree in this quote because book can convey the reader in some perception, depending on their mind. In term of my thinking, if the writer can tell the bad side of the building in more than 1000 words, it is of cause, the readers can belief and agree with them.

‘The future of architecture’ it is a clip about criticizing of the architect. It is an hour about the future of architecture with: Peter Eisenman, Architect/Eisenman Architects Jay Chaterjee, University of Cincinnati Sen. Stanley J. Aronoff, (R)President, Ohio Senate David Childs, etc. However, I can’t figure out or inspiring anything of it so sorry.

MANUFACTURED LANDSCAPE episode 2

It seems to be a misunderstood of Manufactured Landscape when I having the last lecture in term of thinking and the way I perceived the VDO. Therefore, I come up with the topic of ‘What are Manufactured Landscape and Non Manufactured Landscape?’ Moreover, the quote of ‘There is no real nature out there’ is another thing that I picked from the text that I read in the last lecture.

To know what exactly ‘Non Manufactured Landscape’ is we should know what ‘Manufactured Landscape’ is first. Manufactured Landscape in VDO is the beating of new documentary on the world with the evidence of harmfully landscape that people never thought it before. However, all of the result from manufacture processing is mostly from human. With this problem landscape has been set a boundary to separate ‘NATURE’ and ‘LANDSCAPE’ apart. Which seems like Non Manufactured Landscape in term of my thinking still remain the same in term of the space, however, the object that place in that space is more greenly with tree and etc. that not harm to the environment.

The quote that has been picked up in a second paragraphs is ‘There is no real nature out there.’ When I read this quote, I notice that there is something behind it. This sentence may be disagreed for someone, but for me I’m quite agreed. Nowadays, it is real that people try to conserve nature by planting trees and warning each other how bad is global warming, but the truth is that they just try to remain themselves that they did not destroy the world. They still produce the same product and also increase the quantity. Therefore, it is exactly true that there is no real nature out there.

Manufactured Landscape

Nowadays, many of film has been establish against human being which quite helpful for reminding people how preserve a natural environment, this film either. As I watch this ‘Manufactures Landscape’ it’s of cause, my point of view may different to the other. There are 2 quotes that I can inspire from this film which are ‘Understanding without wording’ and ‘Landscape in different vision’. Both quote that I get is not exactly about natural but it is all about the technique that they use for creating this film.

Firstly, Understanding without wording is what I am going to focus on. This quote has been created by the story of Chinese factory. All of the film is running through the zone of each duty. They represent the reality in term of noise of the machine and also the zooming of the steps they work, which all of the story can be told without wording.

Secondly is ‘Landscape in different vision’. In this quote, there are two ways that I can be generated.

1st To talk about landscape, many people will think about natural things or something greeny or a big clear area. However, this film, they interesting in trash and an unusable material. This is quite amazing that they can turn the rubbish into an ART…

2nd A different point of view of the photographer that can get from the picture is different from us. In this case I mean that when they take an overall landscape what I see is just a big object in the middle, however, what they see is when it zooming into the action of people underneath the object in that moment of time. That’s why I think ‘Landscape in different vision’ is an unpredictable quote that I’m interesting. No matter there is 10 people stand in front of this picture, not all of them will perceive the same!!
